Thor: Ragnarok is now my absolute favorite of all the Marvel movies and quite possibly, my favorite movie of 2017.
Movies are awful. Going to the movies is the biggest waste of money and time because there is nothing good to see and no original ideas ever.... Unless it's Thor: Ragnarok. I watch all the movies in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and this one is the most fun, the best written and best acted, and has the best score and best plot. Just overall best everything. It felt like the entire Thor character and franchise was rebooted because they went all Guardians of the Galaxy instead of all Shakespeare and regal. It's so much fun that it makes Guardians feel like a serious movie. I'm sure I've laughed as much during some movies as I did during this one, but it's been so long that I can't even remember the last time. It probably has to do with the fact that there were so many adult-aimed jokes in the movie (Disney, really? I'm impressed with your sauciness! Go ahead!)
I understand that not everyone follows all the movies in the MCU. But after you get past the first ten minutes of Thor: Ragnarok, you can pretty much fall into this movie and be fine without having seen any of the other films. I love the 80s synthesizer soundtrack and the use of Led Zeppelin. I love how they got rid of the queen of wooden acting, Natalie Portman, and replaced her with the brilliant, badass Tessa Thompson. I love how there is an undercurrent of anti-white male supremacy felt throughout the film (I learned that this was no accident and that the makers of the film went out of their way to make sure of it). I love how they changed Hela's backstory to make the Asgardians less absurdly perfect. (I won't go into detail in case you haven't seen it yet.) Also, while we're on the topic of Hela, let's go ahead and say how sexy Cate Blanchett still is. I gotta say it was nice to see Cate in this role and having a good time because let's face it, we don't get to see Cate having a good time very often. I love how Hulk gets some character development. And I adore Jeff Goldblum's character, the Grandmaster. (Can he please get his own movie, PLEASE???) There is pretty much nothing to not love about this movie.
As far as plot, they finally did what I'd been hoping they would do with these Marvel movies: pare down the plot to basics. Good guy versus bad guy. What does bad guy want? Good guy defeats bad guy. Happy ending. That's it. Now we can all concentrate on the visual spectacle and have ourselves a good time while watching.
In case you're wondering, yes, Loki still makes my ovaries twitch. I don't know why that character still doesn't have his own movie BECAUSE BELIEVE ME, I WOULD WATCH THE SHIT OUT OF THAT! TAKE ALL MY MONEY, MARVEL! In all seriousness though, are they going to ever decide if Loki is a good guy or a bad guy? Because I'm not sure if they can keep the flip-flopping going for much longer.
Let's talk about the title. Since it felt like a reboot and was so different from the other Thor movies, can we call it Loki 5? Or Maybe Hulk 1? Or how about Thor Ragnarok: Most Rewatchable Marvel Movie Yet? Or maybe it should just be renamed Thor: Rebooted So Let's Pretend Thor 1 and 2 Never Happened.
So there you have it. There are only about four movies I can recommend in all of 2017 (two of those are Marvel movies: MCU really hit it out of the park this year, holy crap) and this is the best one. It's also really hard to write a movie review without spoiling anything. Just go see it then slide into my DMs so we can talk about all those Easter eggs in the film!
