If you're not in support of all the athletes (not just the NFL) kneeling during the National Anthem, I would like you to stop reading my blog and unfollow me. You don't get it and you never will. Colin Kaepernick started a peaceful movement to raise awareness about injustice and police brutality in this country. Stop making it about the anthem and the military.
I said what I said and I'm not backing down. Guess what? Neither is Colin Kaepernick and the scores of people following in his footsteps.
Here's a wonderful take on the protests from an Asian perspective. The NFL is basically colonialism. "This military image of the NFL is not a particularly pleasant picture. American military pomp brings to my mind a modern history of war atrocities and colonial subjugation targeting the people of Asia primarily through indiscriminate carpet bombing of civilians, a history that is no less brutal or lethal than its history of slavery. Its only saving grace is that it was perpetrated outside of this country, and thus mostly out view of most Americans. But as an Asian in America, I cannot help but draw the connection between the NFL and an ideology of imperialism."
While we're at it, read this article about how to raise non-racist kids, since I know a lot of you white parents out there don't know shit about how to talk to your kids about race and racism. I'm not worried about White Nationalists and racist white conservatives, to be honest. I'm more worried about LIBERAL whites who think that just because they voted twice for Obama, listen to NPR and believe that since they're nice people, they can't be racists. Those are the real people to look out for.
"Do not trust your previous instincts when it comes to race. You were probably raised to equate being nice with not being racist; that’s simply not true. (White) parents worked hard to protect their kids (you) from the ugliness of racism, and a big part of that defense was to put as much distance as possible between “us nice people” and “those racists.” As a result, you probably grew up believing that you know exactly what racists look like: The ones wearing white hoods or red Nazi armbands and waving Confederate flags from their pickup trucks. And they actively spout hateful, violent, racist rhetoric everywhere they go."
It's time to overhaul your entire way of thinking about race. If you're white, you automatically benefit from white privilege and you better start actively checking yourself.
I usually do a write up of the events I’ve organized or hosted and my most-read articles at the end of the year. This was an unusual year (obviously, there is no need to go into it here) so I didn’t bother. Instead I want to highlight a project of mine that I am particularly proud of — it’s my new podcast show, Unverified Accounts, that I cohost with my frequent collaborators, Chris Jesu Lee and Filip Guo. If you're a big movie/TV/book buff, have leftist sympathies, but can't stand 'wokeness' dumbing down our culture, then we're the podcast for you. So far in our 25 episodes, we’ve covered a range of contentious topics.
