Before the show even premiered, I knew Netflix's Girlboss was going to be a disaster. The trailer was awful. And you know that if a trailer sucks, then the actual series/movie is going to suck. Trailers are meant to intrigue, not repel.
I made it 4 episodes in before turning it off in complete disgust. What exactly is so awful about it? I have nothing against the actress that plays Sophia. She is simply saying her lines and playing the part that she was hired to do. It's the writing that's so damned horrible and ludicrous. This comes off as a surprise because Girlboss was created by the same person that brought us Pitch Perfect and is also executive produced by Charlize Theron.
The whole thing just reeks of desperation as if it's screaming at us to think it's cool and cutting edge. But the opposite of cool is just that -- desperate. Proclaiming to be cool is the absolute worst thing you can do if you're trying to come off as edgy. That's what Girlboss feels like. It's like watching a middle-aged, nerdy white dad try to connect with his kids by using outdated hip-hop slang. It's like watching that Kendall Jenner Pepsi ad. Are you cringing yet? Good. Now try watching a TV series while feeling that way. This is why I only made it 4 episodes in.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but it made Lena's Dunham's portrayal of Hannah in Girls look self-aware by comparison. (To it's credit, I stayed with Girls for a full 3 seasons before I gave up.)
Lesson: Read the book. The book is excellent and the real Sophia Amoruso is a total badass. The show is all the things you hate about humanity rolled into one steaming hot pile of shit.
