So according to what I gather from my readers, we have something in common: we are all Drake fans. I'll be the first to admit, if Drake announces a new album release at 6 pm, I'll be sitting on Spotify at 5:55 hitting refresh until I'm able to listen to it. As a matter of fact, I've been listening to More Life over and over again since it came out and my favorite track on it is "Free Smoke." I am an absolute sucker for his hushed tones and all that autotune. The only time I ever got mad at him was when he fake-dated Taylor Swift (please unfollow me now if you're a fan of hers).
If we look past all that crooning and pseudo-feminist appeal, Drake is pretty sexist. Yeah, I said it. Drake has "nice guy syndrome" and his lyrics can reek of victim-blaming. I can't stand it when a guy obsesses over "good girls" and act as if he is saving us from ourselves (VOMIT). So how did Drake become the shining example of modern male empathy? Is it his puppy dog eyes? Is it all the emo vibes he gives off? Is it because the general male population of hip hop is so unbelievably misogynistic?
Article after article comes out declaring Drake as hip hop’s “unapologetic movement of femininity” and pretty much every Drake meme (and here's another one for fun) involves giggling at how "sensitive" he is.
I'll use two of Drake's most popular songs as examples: Just Hold On, We're Going Home and Hotline Bling. In Hotline Bling, he goes off on his ex-girlfriend for having the nerve to get over him and move on. He seems pissed off that his ex now has a life instead of being a "good girl" staying at home and waiting for him to come home from tour. He's mad that she's "running out of pages in her passport" and "wearing less and going out more." (The nerve of her to touch road like that!) In Just Hold On, We're Going Home, he pretty much spends half the song praising a girl for being good while the rest of it sounds kinda date-rapey to me.
So what's a Drake fan to do? I can't stop listening to his music. If he came to town, I'd probably be first in line to buy tickets to his show. Does he have a new video? Quick! I need to get on Vevo so I can watch it!
