Guest Post by Christen Johnson of Sophisticated Chic: My Journey Thus Far
One of my main goals for this year was to plan my own photo shoots to help build my portfolio and expand my brand. I got tired of watching everyone else move forward in their careers while I let mine stand still. I was too busy waiting on others to make a move instead of moving on my own.
Since then, I have been blessed to work with so many different creatives who were thankfully interested in collaborating with me as well. Being able to network with local photographers, models and make-up artists who also have their own successful brands in this cut-throat industry was an experience within itself. I honestly had to force myself to step out of my comfort zone and reach out to people who I’ve never met a day in my life. Sending an email had to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done, let alone responding to the follow up email once I actually received a response back.
I used to hate bragging and showing people my work. I really didn’t want to be the annoying type on social media, constantly posting my accomplishments. But once I realized how dumb that was, I began to put myself and my brand out there more. I was excited to showcase my creative ideas and the positive feedback was the icing on the cake! That was more than enough affirmation for me to know that I’m going in the right direction.
So far, I’ve learned that timing is everything. Not everything may happen when I want it to, but it will happen when it’s supposed to. Being able to trust God’s timing is a hard task, but it’s something that I have to do in order to live happily.
